Lions Shock Sailfish With Late-Inning Comeback
February 16, 2008
SAINT LEO, Fla.- The Sailfish Baseball team was unable to come away with a victory during a three-game series with the Lions of Saint Leo University this weekend. On Saturday, the Fish dropped the opener of a doubleheader 19-2, and were narrowly defeated in a come-from-behind effort by the Lions, 4-3.
Despite a solid outing on the mound by Junior Isaac Hicks (St. Louis, MO), in which the right-hander allowed only 3 earned runs in 6 1/3 innings, the Lions were able to manufacture 2 runs in the final inning to steal the victory.
Scoreless for both teams through 4 innings, PBA was able to get on the board first with a Nick Norley (North Palm Beach, FL) double. After reaching base, Norley was able to move to third on a throwing error by the centerfielder, and proceeded to score on a subsequent error by the Lions catcher.
SLU responded with one run in the bottom of the 5th inning, but they weren’t able to hold off the Fish for long.
In the top of the 6th inning, Jesse Gibbs (Port Republic, MD) and Billy Falconio (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) crossed the plate on a two RBI single by Junior Josh Stedham (North Palm Beach, FL) to give PBA a 3-1 lead, with 6 outs still remaining for the Lions.
PBA was able to maintain their lead by holding SLU to only one run in the bottom half of the 6th inning.
Going scoreless in the top half of the 7th, the Sailfish would have difficulty closing the door on the Lions. Rightfielder, Dale Slimick, drove in the decisive two runs to finish off the Fish on a two run single.
PBA returns to action on Tuesday, February 19th when they play host to Palm Beach County-rival Lynn University with first pitch scheduled for 6 pm. This game will be played at Palm Beach Community College.
