Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.- Beginning their two game road trip to New York on Thursday afternoon, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team came out with a victory over Mercy College thanks in large part to the healthy return of sophomore midfielder Mark Cabrera who tallied the only goal of the contest to give PBA the 1-0 victory.
Sidelined after surgery on his ankle for most of this season and playing in just his second game of the season, Cabrera notched the game-winning goal on a low cross from freshman Kyle Crouse (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland Christian HS) in the 58th minute to give PBA the score.
Already blessed with a deep bench, Sailfish head coach Jose Gomez has now added one more weapon with the healthy return of Cabrera.
“Mark’s been working hard to come back from his injury and he gave us a boost today that obviously helped us get this victory,” said Jose Gomez following the contest.
Battling tough weather conditions after the Mercy College field was drenched from rains the night before, the Fish dominated from a statistical standpoint as they held advantages in both shots and corner kicks with 15-9 and 9-3 respectively. Joseph Yurchak (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland HS) registered his fifth shutout in the win over Mercy while tallying two keeper saves.
“I’m satisfied with the win, and we got the result we were looking for so that’s the important thing,” continued Gomez.
Now 10-4 on the season, PBA will have a day off on Friday before returning to the pitch on Saturday as they will be taking on Nyack College in Nyack, New York in another crucial game for the Sailfish. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
After returning from their trip up north, the Sailfish will host one more home game on Wednesday, October 31st when they welcome in Southeastern University for a 7:00 p.m. showdown at Lantana Field.
