West Palm Beach, Fla.- Hitting the road and putting their recent win streak on the line, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team was unable to get out of St. Petersburg with a win on Monday evening as they fell 2-1 to Eckerd College.
After recent victories over the likes of both Nova Southeastern University and Florida Southern College, it appeared as if the Sailfish were hitting their stride at just the right part of the season but as the Tritons demonstrated on Monday night, every team has their weaknesses. Now 9-4 on the season, the Sailfish turn their attention to their upcoming road trip later this week which will take them to New York to square off against two quality opponents in Mercy College and Nyack University.
Down but certainly not out, head coach Jose Gomez and the Sailfish still have a lot to play for during the 2007 season.
“We created a lot of opportunities tonight, it was just one of those games where we weren’t able to capitalize and put enough good shots together to get a few more into the back of the net,” said Gomez.
Cheyne Roberts (Plant City, Fla./Plant City HS) scored the only goal for the Sailfish on the night as Roberts tallied the goal for PBA unassisted from about 25 yards out in the 8th minute of the cost.
Junior Luke Sheekey provided all the offense the Tritons would need as he tallied both goals in an eight minute span to give Eckerd the advantage and the hard-earned victory.
Goal number one for Sheekey came in the 23rd minute off an assist from junior Greg Cavallini followed up by a one-on-one situation in the 31st minute which gave Sheekey the opportunity to loft a shot over the head of PBA goalkeeper Joseph Yurchak.
After a red card was issued on the Tritons late in the first half, the Eckerd College defense held strong as they played a man down for the final 52 minutes on their way to denying PBA a tough win within the NCAA South Region.
Now 9-4 on the season, PBA turns their attention to Mercy College and Nyack University before wrapping up regular season play on Wednesday, October 31st when they play host to Southeastern University at 7:00 p.m.
