PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.- After a rain out on Saturday forced the postponement of their double-header with Eckerd College, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team got back on the diamond on Wednesday evening as they hosted another Sunshine State Conference foe in Lynn University. Although they would lead 2-0 with a pair of runs in the first inning the Sailfish wouldn’t be able to hang on as they dropped the opener 4-2 before a solid game two that resulted in a 6-1 Sailfish victory for the split.
Junior right-hander Chris Donovan (2-0) followed up her no-hitter in the season opening sweep of Northwood University with another solid performance on Wednesday versus LU at the Lake Catherine Sports Complex with a complete-game effort in the night-cap. Donovan allowed only three hits in seven innings of work as the offense bounced back from a tough game one to back their starting pitcher.
Lauren Bubeck pitched effectively in the game one opener versus Lynn who were making their 2011 season debut however the Lantana, Florida native would be slightly outdone by the Knights’ Callie Darlin (1-0) who earned the win. Darlin finished with eight strikeouts in the victory while allowing only one earned run.
Bubeck would tally seven innings of work in the circle with five strikeouts and three walks while allowing nine hits and four earned r uns.
The Sailfish (3-1) got off to a solid start in game one as they looked to maybe break the game open in their first at-bat. The Fish took advantage of two early errors by the LU defense while junior Mari Stokes contributed to the inning with an RBI single.
Bubeck (1-1) was cruising until the top of the fourth inning when Lynn was able to knot the score at two runs apiece as Darlin connected for a one-out single then saw catcher Danielle O’Rourke reach via a base on balls. A single from first-baseman Claire Cook would load the bases followed by a two-out, two-run single from senior Brittany Gross that plated the game-tying run.
Darlin went back to work in the bottom of the inning and escaped a potential jam with a line-drive off the bat of Cassady Faircloth which Darlin would snag and then alertly fire to first-base to double off PBA’s Caitlin Bouschet who led off the inning with a walk.
LU would add the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth inning on a fielder’s choice off the bat of third-baseman Kasey Murray and then an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning as Katrina Lavadan led off with a triple and came in to score to move ahead 4-2 on a double from newcomer Mandi Brown.
Welch collected two of the team’s four hits in the opening game for PBA.
Game two began in much the way game one did with PBA getting on the board early as they greeted LU starting pitcher Marianne Johnson with three runs in the first frame.
Brittany Jones and Miranda Welch set the table for the big first inning with a single and a walk respectively then both moved up a base on a Mackenzie Johnson sacrifice bunt. A surprise bunt single from Mari Stokes brought home Jones and then saw Welch come around to score on a nifty double steal of sorts as Stokes took off for second-base to draw a throw as Welch came in to score at home.
After Stokes moved to third-base on a wild-pitch, senior Caitlin Bouschet delivered an RBI groundout that Stokes alertly came in to score on a tapper back to the LU pitcher.
Palm Beach Atlantic plated another run in the second and third inning to chase Johnson who finished with two innings pitched while allowing five runs on five hits while adding in four walks. Welch supplied the run in the second frame with a sacrifice fly to score Kimberly Traxler while Bouschet added an RBI single in the third inning to chase Johnson after Stokes led off the inning with a triple.
Darlin re-entered the circle for LU down 5-0 and while she performed admirably in relief by allowing only one run the rest of the way, the pitching of Donovan would keep the LU bats quiet the remainder of the game.
Lauren Powell added a pinch-hit double in the sixth inning for PBA and came in to score on a Jones RBI fielder’s choice.
Stokes finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored while Bouschet drove in two runs in her 1-for-3 showing at the plate in game two.
PBA will return to the Lake Catherine Sports Complex on Saturday, February 12th when they take on Flagler College in a double-header beginning at 2 pm. Both games are scheduled to be broadcasted on the Sailfish Sports Network.
