MELBOURNE, Fla.- Trying to match the men’s solid result against Florida Tech during their season opener yesterday in West Palm Beach, the women took to the court on Friday afternoon in Melbourne with the #28-ranked Panthers holding on for a 6-3 win over #43-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic in women’s tennis action. Florida Tech would sweep all three doubles and hold down the Sailfish for the season opening win.

The Sailfish saw four new players enter their starting lineup from a season ago as they stumbled a bit out of the gate perhaps in large part to learning to play with one another as was evidenced in FIT’s work in doubles. The Lady Panthers cruised in doubles with 8-2, 8-1, and 8-2 scores.

Florida Tech also did well at the top of the singles portion of the match with #24-ranked Huba Katarina defeating PBA’s Vicky Baca in a tight match by the scores of 6-2, 7-6 (5) with #2-singles player Vuokko Vahatalo facing a similar result with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) loss to FIT’s Abby Greif.

Veteran Natalia Trotter picked up the pace for the Fish at #3-singles with a solid 6-4, 6-4 win over Monica Price while freshman Jessica Wharton was tripped up at #4-singles by Stephanie Dohner by the scores of 6-0, 7-5.

Back came the Fish at #5 and #6-singles however as Jordan Ittersagen defeated Abbey Keister 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 and Maria Jimenez came through with a come-from-behind win at 5-7, 7-6 (5), (11-9) win.

Katie Livesay, Krishna Domenech, and Liddy Robinson all competed in exhibition contests.
