WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s tennis program began the 2011 campaign in strong form on Thursday evening at Gaines Park by defeating Florida Tech by a final tally of 6-3. Blessed with a deeper and even more polished roster than in seasons past, head coach Chi Ly witnessed his men’s team prove to be dominating at the top with wins at the top two doubles positions and first four doubles slots to easily secure the match.

After claiming a closer 5-4 victory last season in Melbourne, the Sailfish (1-0) welcomed in the Panthers to West Palm Beach for the opening match of the season.

Junior Krasimir Atanasov, who enters the season ranked #21 in men’s singles in Division II, easily claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win at #1-singles while teaming with partner Luke Bolanos to secure an 8-2 win at #1-doubles. The tandem of Atansov and Bolanos are ranked #24 in men’s doubles.

Newcomer Bastian Guenther would team with senior Alex Minicozzi for the Fish at #2-doubles as they claimed an 8-5 win while Jonathan Kalis and freshman Evan Sahlman just missed out on a doubles sweep as they were defeated 8-2 in #3-doubles action.

A transfer graduate student, Guenther positioned himself well at #2-singles for PBA as he posted back-to-back 6-4 game victories to back Atansov’s good work at #1-singles.

A standout the past two seasons for PBA, Bolanos came out of the gate strong in 2011 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at #3-singles followed by Minicozzi posting a 6-4, 6-1 win at #4-singles.

Kalis and newcomer Cole Conley would battle in the final two spots in singles action with FIT’s Barry Dylewski earning a 7-5, 6-2 win over Kalis and Donovan Wetterstein claiming a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Conley to close out singles action.

Other PBA players that competed in exhibition contests included Jaime Verd, Eric Wade, and Sahlman.

PBA will have over a week remaining until their second match of the season as they will take on Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida on Friday, February 11th at 3 pm.
