PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.- After a record-breaking season a year ago, the reloaded Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team sought to get the 2011 season off on the right foot on Wednesday evening as they hosted cross-town rival Northwood University at the Lake Catherine Sports Complex. Dominating pitching that included a one-hitter from newcomer Lauren Bubeck in game one and a no-hitter by Chris Donovan in the nightcap sealed two 7-0 wins for the Fish.
Armed with eight returners and eight newcomers to this season’s squad, head coach Kimmy Bloemers began her fifth season at the helm of the Sailfish the same way she has the previous two seasons with a season-opening sweep of the Seahawks.
Unlike previous years however, neither game was in doubt as the Fish scored in each of the first six innings in game one followed by an early three run cushion in game two that backed the PBA solid starting pitching.
A transfer from Palm Beach State College, Bubeck began her PBA career in fine form on Wednesday as she went the full seven innings while tallying four strikeouts and three walks while allowing only a first inning double to NU catcher Kayla Duncan. From that point on the only baserunners the Seahawks would reach would be via base on balls as the next six innings from Bubeck followed by seven more from Donovan kept the NU offense off stride.
Donovan recorded her second no-hitter of her three-year PBA career while allowing two walks and five strikeouts in her night’s work.
It wasn’t just the work of their pitchers that led PBA to such a successful opening night but the offense would rap out 24 hits and draw nine walks between the two games as they finished the double-header with a team batting average of an even .400.
Newcomer Brittany Jones played the role of table-setter well in game one with a 2-for-4 performance while also scoring a run. Senior shortstop Caitlin Bouschet added in a 2-for-3 game one as well with a walk and double to her credit. Cassady Faircloth and Mari Stokes each drove in a pair of runs.
Game two saw five PBA players register at least two base hits including a team-best 3-for-4 showing from junior Brittany Schneider. Junior catcher Erica Walters pitched in a 2-for-2 performance including a double while also drawing a pair of walks in the win.
Sophomore Miranda Welch, freshman Mackenzie Johnson and Stokes all chipped in with two hits apiece in game two as well.
Palm Beach Atlantic will next take the field on Saturday, February 6th as they will head west to St. Petersburg, Florida to take on Eckerd College at 2 pm in their first NCAA South Region contests of the season.
