DAVIE, Fla.- Making the short trek to the Nova Southeastern University campus, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team looked to avenge their November 23rd loss to the Sharks as they took to the hardwood for the second time this season in the Don Taft University Center. NSU (11-8) settled that matter early after outscoring the Sailfish by 20 points in the opening period, making any second half comeback impossible for PBA as they suffered an 82-57 loss to the Sharks on Wednesday evening.
Nova jumped out to an early start, pushing a 10 point margin within the first eight minutes of action before the Sailfish answered to get within two points of the Shark advantage. Once senior Elizabeth Fugate knocked down a quick jumper to close the gap at 21-19 during the 8:07 mark, NSU mounted a 22-4 run to close out the final minutes, entering halftime with a comfortable and commanding 43-23 lead.
The Sharks put up impressive numbers through the first 20 minutes, posting 16-27 from the floor for a 59 FG% topped by 9-17 from the free throw line. Struggling from the perimeter in first half (1-9 shooting) the Sailfish registered 10-30 shooting for 33 FG% and made an appearance at the line only twice to start the game.
The opening minutes of the second half were dominated by the Blue and White as the Sailfish put up 18 quick points to get within nine of the Sharks at the 14:54 mark. Despite a fairly even closing period with NSU outscoring the Sailfish 39-34, the Sailfish comeback effort fell just short due to the Sharks dominant first half.
Posting much better numbers to close out the game, PBA finished on 10-25 shooting (40%) in addition to connecting on 80% (12-15) of their trips to the charity stripe. NSU continued its sharp-shooting as they registered 16-33 shooting for a second half 48 FG% and a game total 53%.
Nova was led in scoring by its 6’5” center Stephanie Sarosi, who registered an outstanding 10-10 from the field for game high honors of 24 points. Just missing a double-double on the night, the Sharks senior roped in 8 rebounds and registered 2 blocks as she played just 24 minutes. Also reaching double digits was NSU’s Jasmine Wilkins who connected on 5-6 shooting for 10 points.
The Sailfish were paced by sophomore Ashley Dolberry’s performance of 15 points, three steals, and six rebounds as the 5’9” forward earned nearly half of her points at the foul line. Just behind her was Fugate who finished with 14 points and seven rebounds on 6-12 shooting. Junior Hayley Fields posted 4-11 shooting for 11 points to complement her three assists and three steals in 40 minutes of play.
Experiencing longer gaps between games as they conclude their final month of regular season action, the Sailfish (3-20) will return to the hardwood on Monday, February 14 as they take on Saint Thomas University in Miami Gardens. Serving as the first meeting between the two teams in the 2010-2011 season, the Bobcats will host the Fish for a 7 o’clock Valentine’s Day matchup.
