LAKELAND, Fla.- After taking one from the Sailfish back in December when the Moccasins visited the Rubin Arena, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team hoped to settle the score in their Saturday evening matchup at the Florida Southern College campus. The Mocs (15-3) were relentless from start to finish, however, as the #1 ranked team in the Sunshine State Conference utilized a dominating performance in the paint combined with two halves of over 50 FG% to complete their season sweep of the Sailfish 90-37.
Keeping within two possessions of FSC in the opening minutes of the half, the Sailfish crept to within five points at the 13:28 mark after senior Elizabeth Fugate knocked down a jumper to make it a 12-7 game. Yet that was the closest the Blue and White would get as the Moccasins polished off the period with a 29-8 run to enter halftime with a commanding 41-15 lead.
Demonstrating their prowess down low, the Mocs outscored the Fish 18-2 in the paint as forwards Emma Cannon and Michaela Hawley went for a combined 18 points off of a 7-11 shooting performance through the first 20 minutes of action. Holding PBA to a 31 FG% (6-19 shooting), FSC posted an impressive 52 FG% (14-27 shooting) combined with a 10-12 showing at the foul line.
Commanding every second of the closing half, the Moccasins mounted a charge consisting of a 36 point boost from their bench along with 22 points in the paint to outscore the Sailfish 49-22 in the second period of play.
The stifling Moccasin defense kept the Fish to 8-28 shooting for a second half total of 28%. Meanwhile Florida Southern took care of business on the other end of the court as they bettered their first half percentages by finishing with a 56 FG% from 21-37 shooting, for a game total 54%.
The Mocs showcased four different players in double figures, with Cannon leading all scorers with 12 points to go along with her 11 rebounds and five steals in just 22 minutes of action. Morgan Lamberg came up big for FSC in the second half, scoring 12 points off of 6-7 shooting in 15 minutes off the bench. The Sailfish were led by Fugate who finished with nine points, eight rebounds, and a pair each of assists and blocks as she played all 40 minutes for the Blue and White. Junior Selethia Jackson finished just behind her with 4-7 shooting for eight points and six rebounds.
The Sailfish (3-19) will return to action on Wednesday, February 2nd when they make the nearby trek to Nova Southeastern for an NCAA II non-conference matchup. Hoping to split the season series at one game a piece, PBA will take on the Sharks for a 6 o’clock start on the NSU campus in Davie, Florida.
