Box Score

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Backed by a large crowd on Wednesday night at the Rubin Arena, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s basketball team shook off a recent two-game slide to capture a win at home over the visiting Buccaneers of Barry University by a final score of 66-45. The smothering defense of the Fish led to a number of key runs by the offense as PBA improves to 10-8 under fourth-year head coach Terry Primm.

The Sailfish (10-8) once again received a brilliant overall performance from senior Jonathan Lawrence who led the squad in scoring for the third straight game as he put home 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting including a blistering 4-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc. The fifth-year senior also added in seven rebounds and just two turnovers in 32 minutes of action.

Backcourt mate David Wood continued his double-digit scoring streak to 18 games with a performance of 13 points while adding in a pair of steals.

It wasn’t only the good work of the PBA senior class on Wednesday who also saw a nice lift from their third senior member Darren Sheffield off the bench with five points, but a total team effort which led to their many scoring opportunities on the night.

Sophomore center Ian Sitz chipped in eight points and seven rebounds while guard Dante Valentine gave the Fish a well-rounded effort with eight rebounds, five assists, four points, and three steals in 23 minutes of floor time.

The efforts of the PBA bench led to the Sailfish reserves outscoring BU’s counterparts by a 14-7 margin in the contest.

Although the Buccaneers battled hard throughout the game, the shots were simply not falling for the athletic group from Miami Shores, Florida as the Bucs managed only six field-goals in each half for an overall outing of 24.5% (12-49) in the game.

The Sailfish would counter with a 45.1% (23-51) team shooting performance as seven players registered at least three points on the night.

The game would open with a jumper from PBA’s Sitz followed by a three-pointer from Zack Trapp to push BU ahead 3-2 in the opening minutes. From there however the lead would belong to the home team as PBA saw their advantage grow to as many as 21 points (31-10) in the first-half before settling for a 37-19 lead at halftime.

Following a rousing halftime performance by the PBA Pharmacy Program for the third-annual Chains Game that saw Walgreens defeat CVS Pharmacy, the Sailfish would go back to work against the Bucs.

Primm was able to utilize a variety of lineups down the stretch while the lead ballooned to as many as 27 points on a Lawrence layup with 8:09 remaining. The final tally saw the Sailfish claim the 21 point victory as they now prepare for a long layoff from game action.

Evan White led the Buccaneers on the evening with 15 points on 5-of-16 from the field while Trapp chipped in 10 points. Leading BU scorer and rebounder Willie Whitfield was held below his averages in both categories as he was limited to eight points and six rebounds in 34 minutes.

The Sailfish will have the next ten days off from any games as they will next travel to Florida Southern College on Saturday, January 29th for a matchup in Lakeland, Florida.
