WINTER PARK, Fla.- Playing their second game in as many days, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team completed their mid-week road series with a tough battle against NCAA II #14 ranked Rollins College on Wednesday night. Currently ranked second in the Sunshine State Conference, the Tars (14-2) were too much to handle as they sailed to a decisive win over the Sailfish by a final score of 68-48.
Starting out the first half neck and neck, with the lead changing hands eight different times in the first nine minutes, Rollins finally mounted a substantial lead with under 10 minutes to play in the period. The Tars held the Sailfish scoreless for over six minutes of action, capitalizing on second chance points and PBA errors.
RC concluded the second leg of the opening period with a 20-5 run, entering halftime with a comfortable 21 point cushion over the Fish. The Blue and White posted a 40 FG% off of 9-22 shooting, including 3-9 from long range, but the Tars connected on almost twice as many buckets, shooting 17-31 (54%) and 6-9 from beyond the arc.
Rollins guard Kourtnie Berry paved the way with 10 points in the first half as teammate Amber Heistan was just behind her with nine points collected off of 3-4 shooting from three-point range. PBA’s Elizabeth Fugate registered eight points in 20 minutes of action after going 4-7 from the field.
The second half was all Rollins as they sustained a 20+ point advantage over the Fish through the closing period. PBA knocked the margin down to 15 at the 7:20 mark after junior guard Jordan Kong netted a three pointer, but RC was unable to be tamed throughout the remainder of the second period.
The Tars posted good shooting percentages in the second half (45 FG% off of 9-20 shooting) for a game total of 51%. The Sailfish registered 10-29 shooting (34 FG%), including 6-15 from beyond the arc, for a final tally of 37%.
Berry and Heistan concluded the game with 13 and 12 points respectively, going a combined 9-15 from the field and 7-11 from three point range. The Sailfish registered three different players in double figures in the form of Fugate, Kong, and junior Loren Wilkins. Fugate led all PBA scorers with 12 points and six rebounds off of 6-13 shooting, Kong chipped in 11 points (4-11 shooting), and Wilkins ended with 10 points after going 4-8 in 40 minutes of action.
The Sailfish (2-15) will return to the Rubin Arena for another non-conference matchup with visiting University of Tampa for a Saturday evening matchup. That January 15th meeting is slated for a 6 pm start on the PBA campus.
