SAINT AUGUSTINE, Fla.- After suffering a one-point loss to the Saints in the Rubin Arena earlier in the season, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team made the upstate trek to Flagler College (4-8) this afternoon for a rematch in the nation’s oldest city. Unable to steal one away from hosting FC, the Sailfish could not mount an offensive charge big enough to overcome the Saints advantage as they suffered a 60-49 loss on Tuesday evening.
A low-scoring match throughout the first leg of the opening period, the Saints completed a 11-0 run to push the score to 19-8 with eight minutes remaining in the half.
The Sailfish cut into Flagler’s double-digit lead on three separate occasions, getting to within one point at the 1:00 mark after sophomore Ashley Dolberry connected on a long-range jumper. The Saints put up five points in the remaining seconds, entering halftime with a 31-25 cushion over the Blue and White.
The Saints saw valuable minutes from its sharpshooter Charlsea Owen who tallied 4-6 shooting, including 2-3 from three-point land, for 10 first half points. Dolberry kept the Sailfish within range thanks to her 11 points in 15 minutes of action, shooting 3-5 from the field and going a perfect 4-4 at the foul line.
FC edged out PBA in first half shooting, registering 11-23 and 4-7 from beyond the arc for a first half total of 47 FG%. The Fish totaled 45 FG% off of 10-22 shooting.
The second half looked seemingly identical to the first, with Flagler posting multiple double-digit leads and PBA slowly working its way back into the game.
The Saints quickly extended their advantage to 10 points within the first three minutes before the Fish rattled off six straight points in under a minute to get within four. The Blue and White were the closest at the 11:47 mark when junior Jordan Kong netted a three-pointer to cut Flagler’s margin to 42-39.
The Saints would not yield, however, as they outscored the Sailfish 18-10 to close out the game, with the Fish only getting within six points at any given time. Owen’s jumper with 1:30 left to play sealed the deal for Flagler as they concluded game two of the season’s series between the two teams, with FC registering a sweep of the Sailfish.
Leading all scorers on the night was Owen’s with 23 points off of 8-10 shooting in 37 minutes of play. Also registering double-digit scoring for the Saints was Tierra Ford who, although only shooting 3-7 from the field, collected nine points from the charity stripe.
Dolberry finished with 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals in 23 minutes off the bench for the Sailfish. Also tying her with 11 points was junior Selethia Jackson who added in seven rebounds as well. Senior Elizabeth Fugate played the entire game, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds, while Kong also registered 3-4 shooting from beyond the arc for nine points in 20 minutes off the bench.
The Sailfish (2-14) will travel to nearby Winter Park tonight in order to complete their two-game series against northern Florida opponents. They will play a 7 pm matchup against host Rollins College tomorrow, January 12 in the Warden Arena.
