WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After a thrilling end to the 2010 season and another solid campaign in the fall, the Palm Beach Atlantic men’s and women’s tennis teams are gearing up for what they hope to be another special showing in 2011. The women’s team is coming off a first-ever appearance at the NCAA South Regional Tournament while the men’s team captured its first NCCAA National Championship. Both teams are under head coach Chi Ly who announced both teams spring schedules on Tuesday.
Now in his sixth season as the head coach of both the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Palm Beach Atlantic, Coach Ly and his staff have compiled a pair of rosters they believe will put them in good position to be back in contention for a spot in the highly-competitive NCAA South Region.
The Sailfish women’s squad finished a solid 17-11 last season while not only earning a trip to the NCAA Regional but also upsetting Delta State University for a first-round victory. The Sailfish ladies will return a number of key contributors from last year’s team that would also go on to finish as the NCCAA National Runner-Up as well.
The women’s team opens the 2011 season on February 4th when they travel to Melbourne, Florida for a matchup with Florida Tech. The team will begin their home slate on February 12th as they welcome in Ave Maria University for an 11 a.m. matchup.
The early portion of the Sailfish women’s tennis schedule also includes road dates at Southeastern University (Feb. 18) and Northwood University (Feb. 22) while traveling to nearby Delray Beach, Florida on February 26th to take on Lynn University at the prestigious Delray Beach Tennis Center.
The men’s team also opens up the season against Florida Tech as the Fish will host the Panthers on February 3rd at 3 pm. Other early-season home dates include Ave Maria University (Feb. 12) and St. Thomas University (Feb. 24).
As has been the tradition over the years for the PBA tennis programs, both squads will travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina from March 5th-12th during the Universities Spring Break as they will each play six matches against competition from around the country.
Back in the Sunshine State beginning March 18th the ladies will host seven straight home matches which include four opponents from the Sunshine State Conference and a pair of NCAA Division I opponents in the University of Massachusetts (Mar. 23) and South Carolina State University (Apr. 2).
The men’s team will take on five straight opponents in West Palm Beach beginning March 19th while suiting up against the likes of both Saint Leo University and Eckerd College, key competitors in the NCAA South Region.
Although the regular season performance of both teams will determine any postseason possibilities, the teams will be deciding between the NCCAA Regional (Apr. 22-23) and the NCAA Regional (May 1-3) as possible postseason landings for the Fish.
All dates are subject to change.
