Shaw University Hands Sailfish Home Loss to Close out 2010

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Upon returning to campus after a week-long celebration of the Christmas season, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team took to the court this afternoon against visiting Shaw University for a New Years Eve matchup in the Rubin Arena. The Bears (7-4) would steal one from the Sailfish by a final score of 72-61, as they dominated the paint and the boards and received a 21-point performance from their leading scorer Kyria Buford.
The Fish jumped out to an early lead in the opening minutes as Ashley Dolberry tipped in a rebound at the 17:23 mark, giving PBA its largest lead of seven.
The Sailfish maintained the advantage throughout the majority of the first period thanks to a lift off the bench in the form of eight points from junior guard Jordan Kong. The Bears stayed within range however, slowly chipping away at the PBA lead before finally tying up the game in the final three minutes of the first half. A 10-0 run from the SU side in the final moments of the opening period gave the Bears their first lead of the game, entering halftime with a 33-27 margin.
In addition to Kong, PBA saw good minutes in the first half from sophomore guard Lynsey Poole who posted three steals and seven points on 3-4 shooting. Buford tallied 13 points as well off of 4-12 shooting in addition to her six rebounds. Both teams registered similar percentages from the field as PBA tallied 10-29 shooting (34 FG%) compared to 11-34 shooting (32%) from their counterparts.
Coming out of halftime, the Bears quickly pushed their lead to double digits in the first few minutes, reaching their largest margin of 22 points with seven minutes remaining in the game. Utilizing their size in the paint, Shaw outscored the Sailfish 32-16 down low.
Crashing the boards on both ends of the court, the Bears out-rebounded the Sailfish 49-32, taking advantage of 13 second chance points from 17 offensive rebounds. The Bears also received a big 20-point boost from their bench in the second half to complement their dominance down low.
The Sailfish fought back in the final minutes, chipping away at the Bears 22 point lead before time would expire. The charge would fall short however as the Bears closed out the game with a final score of 72-61. SU outscored PBA 39-24 in the second half off of 16-33 shooting (48 FG%) for a game total of 40%. PBA posted 10-27 shooting (37 FG%) for a final tally of 35%.
In addition to Buford’s complete performance of 21 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and two steals, the Bears saw high scoring figures from junior Brittany Ransom who posted 7-11 shooting, including 4-8 from beyond the arc, for a total of 18 points in 23 minutes.
The Fish were led in scoring once again from senior Elizabeth Fugate who registered 14 of her total 16 points in the second half, and fell just short of collecting another double double with eight rebounds. Dolberry also put up solid numbers for the Sailfish with seven points and 10 rebounds in 32 minutes of action. Kong finished with 15 points on 5-8 shooting, with 4-6 from long range.
The Sailfish (1-11) will travel this weekend to the Atlanta area to take on their friendly neighbors from the north in a two-game series to kick off the 2011 year. PBA will open game one with Columbus State University at 1 pm on Sunday, January 2nd.
