West Palm Beach, Fla.- After a rough first half, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team played a more physical and effective second half only to fall just short as time expired and the University of Tampa walked away with a 2-1 victory before a large crowd on Friday night at Lantana Field.
With physical play dominating the game throughout, the Spartans jumped out to an early lead as UT forward Devin Shaw took a touch pass from teammate Ricardo Cardoso in just the fifth minute of the game.
The Sailfish defense would once again falter near the end of the first half as Zach Barber tallied UT’s second goal in the 43rd minute to aide the Tampa attack and give the red and black a 2-0 advantage heading into half-time. At the midway point, UT outshot PBA 9 to 7 as both teams missed out on a couple of potential scores.
Both teams would continue to play hard-nosed defense in the second period with both teams encountering yellow cards for their rough play. PBA sophomore midfielder Josh Sharpe (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) would enter play and receive a feed from fellow sophomore Cheyne Roberts (Plant City, Fla./Plant City HS) as Sharpe sent his shot past a diving effort by UT keeper Kevin St. John in the 72nd minute.
With the Spartans seemingly on their heels, the Sailfish continued to pressure and missed out slightly on a few terrific saves by St. John to edge the Sailfish and give Tampa the important 2-1 road victory. St. John totaled four saves on the night.
Sophomore goalkeeper Joseph Yurchak (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland HS) did a solid job defending the net for PBA as well as he notched seven saves on the evening including an incredible diving effort against a UT penalty-kick attempt midway through the second half.
PBA drops to 4-2-0 on the season while UT improves to 4-1-0. Both teams compete in the NCAA Division II South Region.
The Sailfish continue their current homestand on Tuesday, September 18th when they play host to Rollins College for a 7:00 kickoff at Lantana Field.
