PBA Baseball Roughed Up by Saint Leo in Saturday Opener
February 16, 2008
SAINT LEO, Fla.- The Sailfish Baseball team was unable to come away with a victory during a three-game series with the Lions of Saint Leo University this weekend. On Saturday, the Fish dropped the opener of a doubleheader 19-2, and were narrowly defeated in a come-from-behind effort by the Lions, 4-3.
What looked to be a close game in the early innings of game one, quickly turned into a lopsided outing in favor of the Lions. Tied at 1 run apiece through 3 innings, SLU was able to push across 3 runs in the 4th inning, and then exploded for 9 more in the 5th, putting the game out of reach.
After allowing the Lions to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning, PBA was able to knot it up at 1 in the top of the 2nd. Junior Joaquin Valdes (Miami, FL) doubled down the left field line, and came around to score on a Nick Norley (North Palm Beach, FL) infield single.
The only other run-scoring production for the Fish came on an 8th inning solo homerun by Valdes, his first in a Sailfish uniform.
Beyond the hits by Valdes, left-fielder Jesse Gibbs (Port Republic, MD) managed to go 2 for 3 at the plate. Norley also had a multi-hit game, going 2 for 4.
Left-hander Zach Grau (Kalamazoo, MI) took the loss for PBA. Three other Sailfish pitchers were thrown into action in the game, highlighted by Junior Oscar Cuevas (Islelandia, NY/Dominican Republic) registering one scoreless inning.
