Saint Leo, Fla.- Taking their undefeated season record into their game with Saint Leo University on Tuesday night, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team would walk away disappointed as the Lions handed the Sailfish their first loss of the season as SLU earned a 4-2 victory.
With both teams deadlocked in a scoreless contest, both teams would earn their first goals of the night in a span of about a minute. The Lions produced the first goal of the evening after Saint Leo forward Brandon Whitsett (Palm Harbor, Fla.) pounced on a deflection from PBA goalkeeper Joseph Yurchak to give the Lions the advantage in the 32nd minute.
The Fish would strike back quickly with some help from the Lions as a free kick sailed into a Saint Leo defender and deflected into the back of the net for an own goal and essentially tied the contest back up after a brief Saint Leo lead.
Both teams would once again go back to a defensive-minded game plan until the 74th minute when the Lions would strike again, on yet another goal from Whitsett that was shot just beyond the reach of Yurchak as the home-standing Lions would gain a lead they would never relinquish.
Only a minute an half after the game-deciding goal by Whitsett, the Lions tacked on goal number three via Eusebio Montoya’s sixth goal of the season from a short pass from Whitsett to extend the Lions lead to a more comfortable 3-1 advantage.
Sophomore Cheyne Roberts would tack on PBA’s final goal in the 84th minute after a penalty kick was awarded the Plant City, Florida native cutting the Lions lead to 3-2. Once again however they would respond as Johnathon Glenn (Trinidad & Tobago) received a through-ball from Montoya to respond to PBA’s goal just thirty seconds earlier.
Yurchak tallied four saves in the defeat as PBA now moves to 4-1 on the season. The Sailfish hope to regroup as they play host on Friday, September 14th to the University of Tampa in yet another important match for the Sailfish. Friday’s match will be featured as PBA’s “Game of the Week” with the game slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
