GREENVILLE, S.C.- After a dominating performance at the NCCAA South Regional last weekend for the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team it was announced that four players and head coach James Kryger were honored for their collective body of work over the 2010 season by being named to the All-Region listing. Kryger was named South Region Coach of the Year while senior Angie Kuhn took home her second straight South Region Player of the Year award.
Joining Kuhn on the All-Region listing were a trio of players that have all had sizable impacts on the Fish this season as they enter play at the NCCAA National Tournament as the #6-seed with a 12-5-1 record. Alongside Kuhn on offense all season long was the steady play of sophomore Ashley Shoaf who was named an All-Region mid-fielder while senior defender Alex Regin and freshman goalkeeper Allison Fox also both brought home All-Region accolades.
James Kryger has helped lift the PBA women’s soccer team to higher win totals in each of his first three seasons. Taking over the program before the 2008 season, Kryger has been the engineer behind the resurgence of the program as he has helped the team increase their win total from five wins in his first campaign to 11 victories last season and already 12 victories in 2010.
The NCCAA South Region Player of the Year honor comes of little surprise that it would go to the senior Kuhn as the North Fort Myers, Florida native dominated the opposition throughout the 2010 season.
Tallying a single-season PBA record of 23 goals in 18 games this season, Kuhn has firmly established herself as one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in all of the NCAA Division II ranks. Adding in six assists to go along with her 23 goals, Kuhn has managed 52 total points for the season as this is the third consecutive season that Kuhn has been a NCCAA All-Region selection.
A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Shoaf got off to a blistering start to the 2010 campaign and has carried through as one of the top players in the midfield for the Blue and White all season long. Shoaf has produced seven goals and six assists for 20 points while starting all 17 games to date.
One of three seniors on the squad this season joining Kuhn and fellow defender Angelica Torres, Alex Regin has continued her role as the defensive leader in the back for Palm Beach Atlantic in 2010. Her gritty play and endless effort has helped the Fish produce eight shutouts in 2010 and a 1.33 goals against average. She has also produced on the offensive end as well this season even adding in one goal and three assists this season.
This season’s selection of Regin to the NCCAA All-Region team is the third such honor for the Brandon, Florida product as she also brought home All-Region honors in 2007 and 2009.
Perhaps the most unknown area of the field coming into the 2010 season for the Sailfish was who would take the reins of the goalkeeper position. From early on in preseason it became obvious that despite her youth, freshman Allison Fox was ready to handle the position.
A product of Waubonsie Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois, Fox earned All-Region honors after posting a record of 12-5-1 as a true freshman while collecting eight shutouts and 68 saves. Fox allowed only 23 goals in 18 games this season.
Palm Beach Atlantic will open up play at the NCCAA National Tournament on December 1st at 2:30 pm when they square off against #3-seed Roberts Wesleyan College in Kissimmee, Florida.
