WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Improving their early season record to 3-2, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s basketball team scored early and often on Tuesday evening on their way to a comfortable home win over the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at the Rubin Arena. All Thirteen active players saw court time and registered at least one field-goal for the Sailfish as they built an early lead then coasted to an 84-58 win.

Jumping on the Tarzans (0-4) early, the Sailfish (3-2) got into a rhythm early as they built up a first-half lead that extended to an astonishing 39-6 with less than two minutes to play in the opening stanza. UPR-Mayaguez would tack on four made free-throws before the half would end as the Sailfish led 41-10 at the break.

PBA smothered the Tarzans offensive attack in the first-half, limiting the opposition to a 19% shooting mark (5-26) while forcing them into 16 turnovers. The Fish would manage just under 50% for the half as they connected on 15-of-31 shots from the field including 14 points from senior David Wood and 12 points from fellow senior Jonathan Lawrence in the first-half of play.

The second-half would allow for head coach Terry Primm to see some valuable court time for some of his younger players as he mixed and matched his lineup while gaining minutes for nearly the full roster of healthy players.

Wood led the Sailfish for the fifth straight game to start the season as the Fort Lauderdale native posted 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting including 4-of-8 from long-range. Wood would chip in a season-high five assists and four steals in 23 minutes of court time. Lawrence was the only other PBA player to reach double-figures as he scored all 12 of his points in the opening half including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.

Sophomore Matthew Gierhl came off the bench for PBA as he tallied eight points while sophomore big-man Ian Sitz added in six points and a team-high nine rebounds in 21 minutes.

The Tarzans were led by guard Mario Diaz who finished with 20 points on 8-of-11 from the field including 3-of-6 from downtown.
