Laurinburg, N.C.- After posting a solid performance in their season-opening win versus Emmanuel College on Thursday night, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team continued their winning ways with another victory over the likes of St. Andrew Presbyterian University on Saturday afternoon.
After posting two quick goals within the first ten minutes of play, the Sailfish defense continued to produce as they held the home-standing Knights the rest of the way en route to a comfortable 3-0 victory. This marks the second consecutive 3-0 decision for head coach Jose Gomez and the PBA squad after posting an identical score against Emmanuel on Thursday evening.
Getting things started for PBA was Plant City, Florida native and sophomore forward Cheyne Roberts who drilled a free kick past the SAPC defense to find senior Matt Sweesy who promptly placed the pass into the back of the net for the game’s first score. Not to be outdone and only 90 seconds later, sophomore Johnathon Clark (Lakeland, Fla.) placed a corner-kick in the direction of junior Chance Sumner (Valrico, Fla.) who unloaded on a long shot attempt that sailed past the Knight’s keeper to give PBA a commanding 2-0 advantage. Roberts would once again add to the PBA lead by adding an insurance goal in the 56th minute off of a penalty kick to notch the final score of 3-0.
With a lead in their grasps, the PBA defense took control for most of the game and helped keep the SAPC offense from connecting on any of their 13 shot attempts. Sophomore goalkeeper Joseph Yurchak (Lakeland, Fla.) tallied six saves to earn his second shutout of the young season.
PBA opens up its home season by playing host to Florida Tech on Tuesday, August 28th where they hope to stay undefeated against a talented Panthers squad. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start time at Lantana Field.
