MURFREESBORO, N.C.- The players may have changed but the result remains the same for the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team as they claimed their fifth consecutive National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) South Region Championship on Saturday with a 5-1 showing over Truett McConnell College. The Fish saw five different players score as PBA claimed right to the automatic bid to the NCCAA National Tournament in a few weeks.
After taking down Emmanuel College on Friday afternoon by a 2-0 tally, the Sailfish (12-6) returned to the campus of Chowan University on Saturday with hopes of once again claiming the Regional Championship banner.
It would be evident early on that TMC would be no match for PBA. Freshman sensation Evan Singlar continued his solid offensive showing of late with a goal just shy of the third minute of play on a breakaway from sophomore Charlie Hubbard that Singlar neatly positioned just inside the far post for a 1-0 Sailfish lead.
Hubbard would claim a goal of his own in the 14th minute when teammate Juan Villagrana found Hubbard after a rebound that came in contact with the crossbar.
Senior Kyle Crouse would cap the scoring with a breakaway goal after a pass from Singlar that positioned the Fish with a 3-0 lead into halftime. The Blue and White led the shot count 14-2 in the first-half of play.
Things would get only slightly better for TMC in the second-half as they did register four shots compared to 13 by PBA while also breaking up what would have been the 10th shutout of the season for PBA and goalkeeper Jonathan Strunk.
Instead the Sailfish would settle for a 5-1 victory as Juan Villagrana (71st minute) and Josh Sharpe (73rd minute) each claimed insurance goals for the victory. Freshman Tyler Sanders would assist on Villagrana’s goal while Crouse added in an assists to Sharpe’s score.
Gavin Duff claimed the goal in the 77th minute for TMC.
Strunk would make just one save at the goal keeper position while senior Andrew Kanarr, sophomore Lewis Thompson, and freshman Chris Karafilov guided the Sailfish defense.
Stay tuned for an announcement about PBA’s seeding for the upcoming NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida on December 2-4.
