ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- Opening up a double-header between the Palm Beach Atlantic University and Eckerd College men’s and women’s basketball teams, the ladies took to the McArthur Center floor for the Lady Tritons opening contest of the season. After a low-scoring first-half for both teams that netted a combined 38 points, the Tritons would withstand a late Sailfish rally to hold on for a 52-42 win.
Trailing by only four points with 1:42 remaining in the contest after a Loren Wilkins layup, the Sailfish (1-1) would fall victim to a 6-0 run by the Tritons to close out the half as senior guard Ashley Lutz came away with a pair of steals and Kati Rausberg was able to connect on all four of her free-throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Junior Hayley Fields led the Sailfish for the second consecutive contest in the scoring column with 13 points while successfully nailing three of her five attempts from three-point range.
Wilkins chipped in with eight points off the bench including a perfect 2-of-2 from the field and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Sophomore Ashley Dolberry brought down 11 rebounds in the first-half on her way to a career-high 14 rebound performance.
Being only the second contest of the young season for PBA and the debut outing for EC, both teams struggled to get in a rhythm in the first-half with the Fish going scoreless for a period of nearly eight minutes in the opening stanza.
PBA connected for a 3-of-18 shooting performance in the first-half (17%) but would rebound for a 10-of-25 showing in the second-half (40%). EC won the rebounding battle 36-32 while forcing PBA into 25 turnovers to 21 of their own.
The Tritons (1-0) were paced by Rausberg with 14 points and 13 points off the bench from freshman Jessica Collins.
The Fish will be back in action on Saturday, November 20th when they host Flagler College at 3 pm at the Rubin Arena.
