WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After a special halftime presentation honoring graduating seniors Angie Kuhn, Angelica Torres, and Alex Regin, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer continued to display their offensive prowess with a dominating 7-0 performance over visiting Clearwater Christian College this afternoon.
Registering 42 total shots, with 25 of those coming in the first period, the Sailfish kept CCC keeper Ahna Boley active from the first whistle as she collected an impressive 16 saves on the day. Sophomore Andrea Jefferson tallied PBA’s first goal in the 5th minute as she headed a ball from inside the 18’ after teammate Katie Runyon’s cross was flicked on by Kuhn.
Jefferson returned the favor only minutes later as her through ball found a wide open Kuhn who quickly laced the opposite corner of the net, pushing PBA’s advantage to two.
Sophomore forward Gabby Lopez collected goals three and four of the day in the 10th and 15th minutes respectively, with the first score coming after Lopez dribbled the length of the Cougar territory and blasted a shot inside the left post. Her second tally occurred moments later as she gathered a deflected shot from Jefferson and quickly placed one between the irons.
Kuhn closed out the first half for the Fish with two more of her own, with goal number 17 on the season happening in the 40th minute as the North Ft. Myers native stole the ball away from her counterpart and placed an unreachable ball in the far left corner of the Cougars’ net. A mere three minutes later, the senior ran down a through ball, played in by Lopez, which she quickly blazed to the near post, posting a 6-0 PBA lead at the conclusion of the period.
Regin, though playing in the backfield for the Sailfish, got in on the action as she registered her first goal of the season off of a penalty kick in the 76th minute. Before the final whistle, head coach James Kryger subbed out his three seniors, who received a standing ovation for their contributions in their four years as a Sailfish.
“We were very happy to have such a wonderful day for a senior game. What a blessing the seniors have been to this program and the legacy they will leave behind is something that will always be remembered. We are very proud of another win tonight but today was all about our three seniors and how wonderful it has been to have them around. As we plan for regionals we hope we can keep everyone healthy and keep the ball rolling into a nationals run,” commented Kryger on the day.
PBA goalkeeper Allison Fox earned the start and the shutout for the Fish, her seventh of the season. The defensive line consisting of Regin, Alyssa DeMonte, Meagan Phillips, Liz Lopez, and Courtney Calhoun kept the Cougars at bay all afternoon, only allowing three shots the entire game.
The Sailfish will take the remainder of the weekend off before returning to action next Wednesday, November 10th in their rescheduled matchup with St. Thomas University. That game is set to take place at Magic Jack Field at 3 pm.
