DELAND, Fla.- Continuing to show improvement seemingly with each meet they run in, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s cross country team posted their best result yet as they finished in fourth place at the Stetson University Hatter Invitational. Junior Meghan Gilmore claimed her second race runner-up finish in the last two weeks while freshmen Morgan Skwira and Victoria Cabrera gave the Sailfish three runners in the top-20 individuals.
The Sailfish once again went up against a competition field that included many NCAA Division I programs and top-notch runners. PBA claimed a fourth-place team finish with 105 points, just two points shy of third-place Embry-Riddle. The University of Miami claimed the team title with 50 points while Florida Atlantic University came away with a 60 point total for second-place.
Palm Beach Atlantic finished ahead of such NCAA Division I programs as Florida Gulf Coast University (5th), the University of Central Florida (6th), and Florida A & M University (7th).
For the second straight week Gilmore was narrowly beaten by FAU’s Friederike Feil who completed the 5K course with a time of 17:33, just six seconds ahead of Gilmore’s final tally of 17:39. As has been the case throughout many of the races that Gilmore has competed in this season, no other runner other than herself that finished in the top-8 were not NCAA Division I runners.
Putting together season-best performances for PBA were freshmen Morgan Skwira and Victoria Cabrera who completed the race with personal best times of 19:40 and 19:42 to place 18th and 19th respectively in the field.
Sophomore Faith Warren was next in line for PBA at 20:17 as she finished in 34thplace. Freshman Danielle Kittell and sophomore Katherine Harvey gave PBA two more runners in the top-50 as Kittlell finished at 20:33 (37th) while Harvey crossed the finish line at 20:46 (44th).Freshman Sarah Walsh collected a final time of 22:10 to finish 74th in the field.
With postseason coming up in a few weeks, the Sailfish cross country teams will be training hard to finish out the 2010 season with a bang. Stay tuned to pbasailfish.com for more results of upcoming meets.
