ORLANDO, Fla.- After a few weeks off from competitive racing, the Sailfish men’s and women’s cross country teams showed that the rest and training helped as they competed very well at the Disney World Cross Country Classic at Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports. After the dust had settled from a very competitive race, the Sailfish women’s team finished 11th while the men earned a 16th place team finish.
The Sailfish women’s team was once again led by junior Meghan Gilmore who finished second overall in a race that once again featured a high contingent of NCAA Division I runners. This type of finish comes as little surprise for Gilmore who has finished in the top five in all three of her races this fall including a win at the Florida Tech Invitational.
Winning the women’s 5K race with a time of 17:42 was Florida Atlantic Universities’ Friederike Feil who completed the course just 11 seconds ahead of Gilmore who finished with a time of 17:53. Gilmore was the only NCAA Division II runner to finish in the top-15 while the remainder of the top-5 were all NCAA Division I competitors.
On the team side, the women’s race was won by the University of South Carolina who although they did not have a runner place in the top-10 individually, the Gamecocks did have five runners in the top-30. USC gained 67 points to defeat Johns Hopkins University who had 81 points. Other top-five team finishers included Coastal Carolina, FAU, and the University of Houston.
PBA’s team total of 330 points placed them as the top NCAA Division II team participant while other regional competitors such as Nova Southeastern University, Florida Tech, and Saint Leo University finished behind the Sailfish.
After Gilmore’s second-place finish, the team had a number of other runners reach solid results as well.
Freshman Morgan Skwira finished in the 68th place slot with a time of 19:48 while fellow freshmen Victoria Cabrera (20:06) and Danielle Kittell (20:16) finished 84th and 96th respectively. Sophomore Faith Warren was next in line for PBA with a time of 20:36 (112th), while sophomore Katherine Harvey closed out the race with a time of 20:51 to finish in 118th place. Sarah Walsh (22:06) closed out the list of PBA competitors.
On the men’s side, the Sailfish continue to make progress as they rely on a bevy of freshman runners. Justin Mikesell paced the Sailfish individuals as he closed out the race with a time of 28:40 in the men’s 8K race which placed him in 109th place at the event.
Nicholas Joseph closed out his day in 130th place after a time of 29:50 while fellow freshman Chris Lopez managed a time of 30:04 to finish in 133rd place. Kyle Mason and Andrew Rodberg finished back-to-back at 30:50 and 30:51 while Kyle Pryce finished with a time of 32:18, good for 163rd place. Brad Treen came in at 33:07.
The University of Windsor (Ontario) took home the men’s title with 22 points including the individual champion of Anthony Berkis at 24:33. Seven Windsor runners finished in the top-10.
The Sailfish cross country teams will be back in action on October 15th when they travel to Deland, Florida for a trip to the Stetson University Hatters Cross Country Invitational.
