WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After falling in the first few minutes of double-overtime in their last outing versus Florida Southern College, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team bounced back with a similar result against the likes of St. Thomas University on Tuesday afternoon with a 1-0 overtime win over the Bobcats. Lewis Thompson scored the game-winner in the 105th minute of action to help PBA claim their fourth win of the season on a beautiful afternoon at Magic Jack Field.
In a back-and-forth defensive struggle, the Sailfish (4-3) finally wrestled the victory away from the visiting Bobcats (4-5-1) as Thompson dribbled in from just inside the 18-yard box and while falling forward from the left-side, was able to place a shot past STU goalkeeper Carlos Uculmana for the golden goal and match victory for the Fish.
Both goalkeepers were active for much of the match as PBA’s Jonathan Strunk matched Uculmana with seven saves each while Strunk earned his third shutout of the season.
With both teams dealing with a breezy October afternoon, the Bobcats managed to earn the shots lead in the first-half by a 9-6 count while also leading in corner kick opportunities at 3-2. The Fish would turn the tables in the second-half by earning seven shots to that of only four on the STU side. PBA also produced three corner kicks in the second half to that of only one for the Cats. St. Thomas did not manage a shot in the overtime period.
The Sailfish will now turn their focus back to some important road contests as they will take on Ave Maria University tomorrow at 6 p.m. followed by a matchup versus Lynn University at 3 p.m. on October 14th in Boca Raton, Florida.
