VALDOSTA, Ga.- Making the long trek north across the Florida-Georgia state line, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s tennis team began play on Thursday at the annual ITA Regional tournament, this year on the campus of Valdosta State University. As he has for much of his Sailfish career, #1-singles player Krasimir Atanasov paced the PBA efforts by winning his first-round matchup along with teaming with Luke Bolanos for a first-round doubles win as well.
Now playing as a junior, the #5-seeded Atanasov defeated his opponent, University of West Alabama’s Tom Piekart in three sets by winning 6-1, 3-6, 10-6 to move on to the round of 32. Atanasov will square off against VSU’s own Otto Lenhart at 11:30 a.m. on Friday morning for the chance to make the final 16.
Atanasov and Bolanos would team up as the #7-seeded doubles duo and defeat the tandem of Batabash and D’Angelo from Florida Southern College by an 8-5 tally then turn around and win again against Alabaster/Cooper to move into the quarterfinals. Atanasov and Bolanos will have the tough task of facing VSU’s #1-seeded doubles tandem on Friday as well.
Other players participating for head coach Chi Ly included senior Alex Minicozzi and sophomore Jonathan Kalis who were taken down 8-3 to a University of West Florida tandem while also falling to Florida Southern College 8-2.
Despite his solid efforts, Bolanos would not be as fortunate as his doubles teammate as he fell to Valdosta’s Kutschenko 4-6, 2-6 in his first singles match of the tournament.
Minicozzi and Kalis would face a similar outcome as they were defeated 3-6, 3-6 and 2-6, 1-6 respectively.
