GREENVILLE, S.C.- Meghan Gilmore has already accomplished a lot for her first official race in a Sailfish cross country uniform. The former soccer player at the University of Georgia proved this past Saturday at the Florida Tech Invitational that she could make the transition to collegiate runner by taking home the individual title. For her efforts, Gilmore was also named the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Women’s Runner of the Week.
Needing 17:59 to complete her first cross country race as a collegiate runner, Gilmore edged out the University of Tampa’s Heather Nicholsi for the 5K title at the FIT Invitational in Melbourne, Florida.
Gilmore used the last 1000 feet to burst ahead of the competition and claim the eight-second margin of victory for the first women’s cross country individual championship since the 2007 season when former standout Hannah Berg claimed the FIT Invite championship.
The Sailfish men’s and women’s cross country teams will be leaving Friday afternoon for a trip to Gainesville, Florida to compete in the UF Mountain Dew Classic on Saturday, September 18th.
