SEARCY, Ark.- For the second consecutive year, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team opened up their season on the road as they took on Arkansas native Harding University. The Lady Bison proved to be more than the Sailfish could handle as they scored early and often, taking their home opener by a score of 3-1.
Although neither team recorded very many shots in the first half (PBAU 3, HU 4), Harding drew first blood in the 15th minute after Lauren Hawes collected a loose ball in the box and quickly gave the Bison their first lead.
PBA answered quickly later on in the half as sophomore transfer Katie Runyon found midfielder Ashley Shoaf on the left side, whose power from 30 yards out connected with the upper right corner of the net, tying the game in the 35th minute.
HU’s offense took over just before the half as Paola Eusse found Adriana Lucar alone on the left side, beating Sailfish goalkeeper Allison Fox in a one-on-one matchup and giving the Bison a lead that would not be overcome. Harding would secure one more goal within the first minute of the second period after Eusse returned the favor to Lucar, securing a 3-1 lead for the remainder of the match.
The Fish would not go down without a fight as they totaled 10 shots in the second half, but HU goalkeeper Chelsea Hornbeck shut out all five of those that came close.
Freshman goalkeeper Allison Fox earned her career start at PBA, playing all 90 minutes and recording one save on the day.
The Sailfish (0-1) will take on one final Arkansas opponent in Ouachita Baptist before returning home to West Palm Beach. That match is to take place on Labor Day morning at 10 am in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
