LAKELAND, Fla.- Gearing up for their opponent at the NCAA Regional tournament this coming week, the Sailfish women’s tennis team began their postseason run on Saturday by participating in the NCCAA South Regional tournament at Southeastern University. The Fish breezed to a 7-2 win as they claimed their 11th win of the season.
Head coach Chi Ly collected NCCAA South Region coach of the year honors for leading the Sailfish women’s team to an impressive regular season finish.
PBA dominated the opening of doubles action on Saturday with an 8-2 win at #1-doubles behind the steady play of Lina Rubiano and Natalia Trotter. Although the Sailfish were leading 3-1 in #2-doubles, an injury to Sailfish senior Natalie Aleman required the tandem of Aleman and Braaten to retire for a loss.
Jordan Ittersagen and Krishna Domenech then came back for PBA and posted an 8-3 win at #3-doubles as PBA re-took the lead heading into singles.
Rubiano continued her solid play at the top with a straight sets win of 6-0, 6-0 at #1-singles while Trotter moved up to #2-singles due to the Aleman injury and posted a 6-0, 6-1 win. Braaten needed a bit more time but still managed a 6-1, 6-0 win at #3-singles while Ittersagen also produced solid results at 6-1, 6-0.
Domenech closed out the competition for PBA with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #5-singles with #6-singles being a default win for the Fire.
