LAKE WORTH, Fla.- After winning their last 16 games, it is hard to imagine the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team having a losing streak however that is exactly what transpired on Saturday afternoon at John W. Anderson Field as the Florida Southern College Moccasins handed the Fish a pair of losses including the final game in 10 innings. FSC won the opener 5-4 and the second game 6-3.

Palm Beach Atlantic (31-9) had not lost a home game this season coming into today’s action while extending their team record win streak to 16 games earlier this week by defeating Nova Southeastern University on the road. The Mocs (25-20) however came ready to play on Saturday as they provided a consistent offensive approach with enough pitching and defense to escape Palm Beach County with two victories while evening their season series with PBA at 2-2.

Sailfish senior starting pitchers Ashley Jones (20-6) and Heather Laird (10-1) took the losses for PBA as Laird dropped her first game of the season in the second game despite going 9.2 innings.

In the opener, Jones would go to the rubber and allow five earned runs and nine hits to the FSC offense as FSC jumped out ahead 3-0 with three runs in the top of the second inning. Christine Clark led off the inning with a solo homerun while Peggy Alex added a two-run shot of her own later in the inning.

PBA responded with two runs themselves in the bottom of the second as Chelsea Gravini came through with an RBI single then drew a cutoff of the throw home which allowed a second run to be scored.

Three straight singles in the top of the third inning for FSC allowed another run home as PBA then trailed 4-2. Clark struck again in the fifth inning with an RBI single to advance the lead to 5-2 for the Moccasins.

PBA matched Clark’s run-scoring single with one of their own in the fifth off the bat of Mari Stokes. They added one final run in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout from Dani Perrotti however a flyout ended the game on the next play.

Clark was the star for the Mocs both at the plate and in the circle as she finished 3-for-3 with three runs driven in as she collected a homer while winning her tenth game of the season by going the full seven inning s. Clark scattered 12 hits while allowing four runs (two earned) and striking out two batters.

Stokes finished 3-for-4 in the opener for PBA while Miranda Welch went 3-for-3 with a run scored.

In game two, the Moccasins countered PBA’s Laird with their own senior right-hander in Morgan Brown who went the full ten innings in earning her fourth win of the season. Brown allowed 11 hits and three walks while striking out four batters and allowed only three runs.

PBA fell behind 1-0 before matching the Mocs with a RBI single from Cassady Faircloth in the bottom of the third inning then went briefly ahead 2-1 after a run-scoring single from Stokes in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Back came the Moccasins however in the top of the sixth inning as they re-took the lead with two more runs to push ahead 3-2.

Faircloth came through with a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh then eventually scored the tying run on an error off the bat of Dani Perrotti which tied the game a 3-3.

With Laird facing trouble in the tenth inning, PBA head coach Kimmy Bloemers opted to go with Jones back in the circle however Dezirae Parsons greeted her with a game-winning hit. They follow with another hit and a walk then finally a two-run single by Lindsey Powell that plated the final two runs for the 6-3 final.

Stokes and Welch both registered two more hits for the Fish as did Bouschet and Faircloth in game two.

Palm Beach Atlantic will return to the diamond for a double-header on Tuesday, April 20th when they host Lynn University for a double-header beginning at 5 p.m. The games will be played at Palm Beach State College.
