STARKVILLE, Miss.- For the first time in the short history of Palm Beach Atlantic University being a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), a Sailfish team has received votes in a national top-25 poll. That squad is the PBA softball team which appeared in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) top-25 poll in the receiving votes category.
The Sailfish, now 31-7 on the season after taking both games of a double-header on the road on Wednesday evening at Nova Southeastern University, also moved up to #6 in the latest NCAA Regional poll that was released early Wednesday afternoon. Having gone a perfect 6-0 over the previous week including a 4-0 in-region record with sweeps over Barry University and Florida Tech, the Fish jumped two spots from the previous week’s rankings of #8 in the regional poll.
Playing in the very competitive NCAA South Region, PBA ranks behind the likes of the University of Alabama-Huntsville, Valdosta State University, Rollins College, the University of Arkansas-Monticello, and the University of West Florida in the 1-5 positions in the NCAA regional poll that is released each Wednesday until the end of the season. Nova Southeastern and Barry follow PBA in the 7-8 spots while the University of West Alabama and Ouachita Baptist round out the regional top-10 poll.
Although the NFCA national poll is not directly affiliated with the NCAA regional rankings, the NFCA poll is slightly different to the order of the regional rankings with Valdosta State holding a #3 national-ranking, Rollins at #8 and Alabama-Huntsville at #12 nationally. Arkansas-Monticello sits at #23 while West Florida joins PBA in the receiving votes category.
Palm Beach Atlantic has only six regular season games remaining on the schedule while also participating in the NCCAA South Regional Tournament set to take place on April 23-24 in Palm Beach County.
