Sailfish Tally Pair of 8-0 Wins Over Ave Maria University

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.- Taking on a non-NCAA opponent for just the second time this season, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team hosted Ave Maria University for a double-header on Saturday afternoon at Amanda J. Buckley Memorial Stadium. Palm Beach Atlantic its usual solid pitching while sophomore Brittany Schneider led the way offensively with a perfect 6-for-6 showing between the two games as PBA prevailed 8-0 in both ends of the double-header.
A first-year program near Naples, Florida, Ave Maria University is a National Intercollegiate Athletic Association (NAIA) program and a member of the Sun Conference. The pair of losses drops the team to 4-18 on the season.
Palm Beach Atlantic (29-7) continued to lengthen their program-record winning streak to 14 games in a row while the sweep pushed their home record to 18-0 during the 2010 season. All three Sailfish pitchers logged innings on Saturday with Heather Laird (10-0) picking up the win in game one and fellow senior Ashley Jones (18-5) completing the win in game two. Sophomore Chris Donovan tossed two scoreless innings in the opener as both games lasted only six innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.
Game one ended on a bases-loaded walk to Schneider that brought home the eighth run while senior Chelsea Gravini crushed a two-run triple in game two in the bottom of the fifth inning to push PBA to their second 8-0 win.
The Sailfish pounded out 13 hits in the opener with Caitlin Bouschet joining Scheneider in the three-hit category with a 3-for-3 performance including three RBI’s and two runs scored. Both players had a triple with Schneider driving in a team-high four runs and scoring once.
Natalia Ojeda and Erica Walters continued to do well at the top of the lineup with Walters collecting a triple.
Laird tossed the first four innings in game one while striking out six and allowing only one hit and two walks. Donovan walked three and struck out three in her two innings of work while allowing only one hit as well.
Jones went the full five innings in game two with 12 strikeouts while allowing three hits and one walk.
Samantha Crews pitched well for AMU until the final inning as the score was 1-0 in favor of PBA entering the fourth frame when the Fish added two runs followed by five more in the fifth inning. Crews took the loss while allowing 13 hits and eight runs (seven earned).
Schneider finished game two with another 3-for-3 performance while scoring twice. The Pine Castle Christian product collected a second triple on the day while also adding in a double.
The bottom of the lineup did a majority of the damage for PBA in game two with Dani Perrotti and Miranda Welch also joining Schneider as players with multi-hit games as Perrotti was 2-for-2 and Welch 2-for-3.
The Sailfish will have the beginning of the week off from game action next week before traveling to Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida for a double-header on Wednesday, April 14th beginning at 5:30 p.m. Both games of the double-header will be broadcasted live on the Sailfish Sports Network.
