LAKE WORTH, Fla.- Pushing their winning streak to eight games, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team got a pair of dominating performances on Thursday evening as seniors Heather Laird and Ashley Jones led the way to PBA’s sweep of Lees-McRae College at John W. Anderson Field. Laird tossed a complete game shutout in a five-inning mercy rule win of 8-0 and Jones tossed her first career perfect game in game two as she set down all 21 batters she faced.
Although Laird was touched for two hits, both were infield singles as the Sailfish (23-7) scored four runs in the first inning, three more in the second inning, and closed out their scoring with another run in the bottom of the third frame.
Laird’s record now moves to 8-0 on the season as she struck out four batters, didn’t walk any, and allowed only the two hits in a five inning shutout.
Palm Beach Atlantic pushed across four runs in their opening at-bat against the Lady Bobcats (11-21)as ten hitters came to bat. The Bobcats started out sloppy defensively as they made four first inning errors to aid the Sailfish cause. Junior shortstop Caitlin Bouschet and freshman third-baseman Miranda Welch added hits in the inning as Welch drove home the fourth run.
The Fish added three more runs in the second inning as Mari Stokes delivered with a two-run double to plate both Erica Walters and Cassady Faircloth who reached on an error and a walk respectively. Dani Perrotti added a RBI groundout.
The Blue and White finished off their scoring in the third inning as Bouschet doubled with two outs then came home to score on a Walters sharp single up the middle.
Walters and Bouschet led the way in the opener as both players finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored while Walters also drove in two runs.
In the nightcap, Jones utilized a strong defensive effort while limiting the Bobcats from reaching base. The senior Jensen Beach product struck out nine batters in facing the minimum. Tonight marked her third career no-hitter adding to a no-no against Flagler College earlier this year as she improves to 14-5 on the season.
The Sailfish played acceptional defense all the way around however they were particularly strong up the middle with middle-infielders Bouschet and Natalia Ojeda both making some solid plays while Stokes in center-field made a number of tough catches in center. Sophomore Erica Walters did her usual solid work behind the plate in catching both Laird and Jones.
PBA got a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to back Jones in game two. Miranda Welch was hit by a pitch with one out then followed a single by Perrotti. Freshman designated player Karli Newton then stepped in as she smoked a RBI single into left-field for her first career hit and RBI in her first collegiate start. Ojeda would tack on a sacrifice fly later in the inning for an RBI.
The Sailfish would add on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Perrotti placed a run-scoring single through the right-side that plated Faircloth.
Perrotti finished 2-for-3 in second game while Chelsea Gravini contributed a triple.
Now winners of eight games in a row, the Fish will have the Easter weekend off as they next suit up on Tuesday, April 6th as they will battle Barry University at 5:30 p.m. at Palm Beach State College.
