LAKE WORTH, Fla.- Utilizing a strong pitching performance from sophomore Logan Thomas, the Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball team cruised to a 8-0 win on Tuesday evening over Nova Southeastern University at Dave Manzo Field. Thomas went seven strong innings while the Fish got a three-run homerun from senior Neil Hardon and a two-run triple from Jonny Herrera to lead the offense to their ninth win of the season.

Thomas earned his third win of the season and posted his second straight solid start as he fanned four batters and allowed just four hits and no walks to a Sharks (15-15) team who had posted six straight wins coming into play tonight. PBA is now 2-1 against NSU for the season.

A game that lasted under two hours, NSU starter James Martinez and Thomas both breezed through the first three and a half frames as both hurlers threw a lot of strikes and got easy outs from their defense. After Thomas posted another zero in the top of the fourth, Martinez would go back out and try to do the same; however the right-handed NSU pitcher would run into trouble his second time through the Sailfish batting order.

Seniors Vasilios Mila and Scott Urbanek both singled to begin the inning then moved into scoring position on a groundout from Sam Testa. Senior Tony Livelsberger then came through with a base-hit to left-field that plated Mila for the game’s first run. Stepping up next would be another run-scoring hit, this time off the bat of designated hitter Justin Sizemore.

After Martinez retired the next PBA batter for out number two of the inning, it appeared he might escape with no further damage. That thought however was erased on a big swing from Hardon who deposited Martinez’s 3-2 offering over the left-field wall for a three-run homerun and a 5-0 PBA lead.

The Sailfish would go back to work in the bottom of the sixth inning as well with Herrera knocking a pitch from Martinez off the left-field wall for a two-run triple, plating Keith Clabaugh and Hardon who had walked and singled in the inning previously.

Second-baseman Peter Graffeo, making his first start in the field on the season after playing as a pitcher only , collected his first hit and RBI as he smacked a single through the left-side and plated the final run of the sixth inning and the game as it put PBA up by the final tally of 8-0.

Sophomore right-hander Carlos Hechavarria would log the final two innings in relief for PBA and pitch very well, allowing no runs or hits while striking out two batters.

Urbanek finished 3-for-4 on the night while Sizemore and Hardon both collected a pair of hits with Hardon driving in three runs and scoring two more.

The Sailfish will have the next two days off from game action but return to Dave Manzo Field on Friday, March 26th when they host Lynn University for a 6 p.m. game. The Sailfish will travel to Boca Raton to take on the Fighting Knights for a double-header on Saturday. The Friday night game can be heard live on the Sailfish Sports Network.
