MIAMI, Fla.- With the help of new Palm Beach Atlantic University cross country coach Sonja Friend-Uhl, Sailfish runner Meghan Gilmore is making waves as a competitor this spring in offseason track meets. Running in her second meet of the spring on Saturday at the University of Miami Hurricane Invitational, Gilmore was the top collegiate runner in the women’s 3,000 meter race and finished as the third collegiate runner in the women’s 1500 meter race as well.
A transfer from the University of Georgia after playing soccer for the Lady Bulldogs, Gilmore has restarted her running career with a splash as a new Sailfish.
Gilmore began the offseason with a first place finish at The Diploma Dash, a 5K road race sponsored by the Sailfish Striders, as she finished as the first female runner to cross the finish line with a time of 17:56 and finishing third overall.
She completed the 3,000 meter race in a time of 10:01 on Saturday, almost exactly a minute ahead of all other collegiate runners including those competing for the University of Miami, University of Florida, and other larger NCAA Division I institutions. In the 1,500 meter race Gilmore completed the shorter trek in a time of 4:46 which placed her fourth overall and third amongst collegiate runners, finishing just nine seconds behind the top finisher.
Gilmore didn’t have to look far for support from her coach in each of Saturday’s races as Friend-Uhl was running right beside her new found star. A former two-time world champion runner who still competes regularly in races throughout the state, Friend-Uhl finished first among all runners in both events as she completed the 3,000 meter race in a time of 9:49 and the 1,500 meter race in a final time of 4:28.
The full squad of men’s and women’s cross country runners will be in action next weekend as they take part in the University of Central Florida Invitational on Saturday, March 27th. Stay tuned to pbasailfish.com for future results on the upcoming races for the Sailfish cross country teams.
