WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After a slow start to their season about a month ago, it’s been full steam ahead for the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s tennis team as they took another solid step on Saturday to securing a possible berth in the NCAA South Regional Tournament as they defeated #37-ranked University of Tampa by an 8-1 mark at Gaines Park. The win pushes PBA’s record to 7-6 on the season.
The PBA ladies came away with three victories in doubles action, all by the same score of 8-3 with Lina Rubiano and Natalia Trotter combining at #1-doubles while Natalie Aleman and Amber Braaten continued their good work in the #3-doubles role. Freshman Jordan Ittersagen and junior Krishna Domenech posted a good showing with a victory at #3-doubles.
Rubiano set the tone early in singles as well with a 6-4, 6-2 win while the only senior on the squad Aleman jumped out with a 6-4, 6-2 win of her own at #2-singles.
Trotter continued to show improvement each time out by winning 6-0, 6-2 at #3-singles while Braaten gave the Sailfish a solid showing at #4-singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Ittersagen was pushed a bit deeper but still managed to push through for the win with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at #5-singles. UT collected their only game victory with a 6-4, 7-6 (7) win at #6-singles.
Ranked #37 nationally and #10 in the South Region, the University of Tampa team drops to 2-10 as a member of the very competitive Sunshine State Conference.
The Sailfish will hope to ride their recent momentum into their next match as they will battle against Middlebury on Tuesday, March 23rd at 4 p.m. as they continue their recent home stretch at Gaines Park.
