WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Although the stands weren’t packed with Palm Beach Atlantic students on Spring Break, the men’s basketball team still found a way to persevere as they defeated #1-seed Emmanuel College on Monday evening in the first round of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) South Regional Tournament held at the Rubin Arena. A game that lasted two and a half hours with 107 total free-throws shot, the Fish prevailed 99-89.
Through the first 30 minutes of the contest, it would appear the Sailfish (4-23) might run away with the contest as they built their lead to as many as 20 points in the first-half and even up to as many as 25 points in the second-half to be comfortably in control.
With that being said, the Emmanuel College (21-11) continued to give 100% intensity and forced the Sailfish into some turnovers while also getting to the free-throw line.
In the end however, the Sailfish were able to withstand the late Lions push and hold on for the ten point victory. After the two teams combined for 41 free-throws in the first-half, the total skyrocketed to 66 trips to the charity stripe in the second-half in what was a matchup of two physical, and scrappy teams.
Junior Hunter Ross led the scoring efforts for PBA as he posted 21 points and four rebounds as five Sailfish players reached double-figures. Senior point guard Chris Joseph played the entire 40 minutes while just narrowly missing a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists. The senior Miami, Florida native was 15-of-26 from the free-throw line while adding in four steals.
Phil Pejovic chipped in with 13 points off the PBA bench while big man David Gabriel closed out his night with 12 points and four rebounds in only 13 minutes of court time. Senior DeAndre Williams also posted a solid night offensively with 12 points on a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc but struggled with foul trouble himself by fouling out mid-way through the second-half and playing just 14 total minutes.
For the Lions, they were led by a 29 point outburst from Tedrick Hudson who played a complete ballgame by getting his points in a variety of ways. The athletic guard finished 9-of-17 from the field including 3-of-8 from beyond the arc while closing out his night with an 8-of-11 mark from the charity stripe. Hudson did finish with seven turnovers.
Backing up his play was 14 points off the bench from Asmatiek Fields by finishing 12-of-13 from the line while Graham Maxwell and Avery Morris added in 13 and 12 points respectively.
After the big PBA lead would dwindle back to single digits when Maxwell drained a jumper with 5:56 remaining, the Sailfish would go back to work as they increased the lead back out to as many as 13 points on two different occasions.
EC would not quit and even got the contest back to a two-possession game with 14 seconds left however a pair of Ross fast-break dunks put the game away in the final seconds.
Palm Beach Atlantic now advances to the NCCAA South Regional Championship against #2-seed North Greenville University at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9th at the Rubin Arena. Admission is free so come on out and support the Sailfish in their quest to take home the 2010 NCCAA South Region championship.
