TAMPA, Fla.- Battling in two tight contests, the Palm Beach Atlantic University and the University of Tampa softball teams split their double-header on Saturday afternoon at the UT Softball Complex. Senior right-hander Ashley Jones tallied two complete game efforts and didn’t allow an earned run with the Fish winning 2-0 in game one and dropping the second game 2-1.
Palm Beach Atlantic (13-5) extended their win streak to a program-high nine wins in a row with the 2-0 game one victory as Jones went the distance and tallied ten strikeouts with only three hits allowed as PBA pushed across two unearned runs in the second-inning.
Heather Vanlandingham took the game one loss for UT as she worked around seven walks in seven innings as the Sailfish left 10 runners on base. The senior Tampa native allowed only two hits to the Fish and was able to escape her wildness to keep the Spartans within striking distance.
PBA shortstop Caitlin Bouschet collected an RBI in the game on a bases-loaded walk.
In game two, the Sailfish once again sent Jones back to the pitcher’s circle, this time opposing her high school teammate in former Jensen Beach High School standout Kari Walsh. Both hurler’s tallied impressive performances in the nightcap as the game lasted under an hour and a half.
The Spartans got on the board quickly with two runs coming in to score in the first-inning. After the leadoff hitter Julie Wisniewski singled and Susan Jallo reached on an error, both runs came in to score on a throwing error by Jones on an attempted sacrifice bunt by Cassie Barnes that would up in the right-field corner.
Tampa (8-6) would not score again however the Fish would be only able to manage a two-out RBI double by Erica Walters in the fourth inning that plated Mari Stokes. The Sailfish would threaten in the seventh however a popup ended the game and left the two teams with a split.
Walsh (5-2) tallied the win by allowing five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Jones finished game two with ten more strikeouts.
PBA will begin their Spring Break week on Tuesday, March 9th when traveling to Barry University for a double-header beginning at 5:30 p.m.
