STARKVILLE, Miss.- For the first time in the short history of Palm Beach Atlantic University athletics as members of the NCAA Division II, a Sailfish student-athlete has been recognized as a National Player of the Week. This outstanding accomplishment was achieved by softball senior Ashley Jones for the week of Feb. 22-28. The honor was awarded by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) while Jones also took home the honor of NCCAA National Player of the Week.
A senior from Jensen Beach, Florida and a product of Jensen Beach High School, Jones has seen her fair share of recognition during her storied four-year career in a Sailfish uniform however her recent production in the pitcher’s circle was some of her finest work to date.
During the week, Jones finished 3-0 while tossing her second career no-hitter, a seven inning outing in game one on Friday evening that witnessed her finish with 14 strikeouts against Flagler College. Continuing where she left off in game one, Jones went back to the circle in game two while allowing no hits through the first five innings before the Fish opted to go to the bullpen. When the Saints tied the game up at 3-3 in the top of the seventh, head coach Kimmy Bloemers opted to go back with her ace Jones who tallied the final 1.1 innings of work as the Fish prevailed in extra innings by a score of 4-3.
Just one day later, Jones started game one against Mercyhurst College and dominated again with 10 more strikeouts in a 6-0 shutout win for the Fish.
For the week, Jones tallied 20.1 innings of work while allowing no runs, just four hits, three walks, and amassing 34 strikeouts. On the season through today, Jones is 7-3 with a 0.53 earned-run average while registering 98 strikeouts in 65.2 innings of work.
The NCCAA honor is the second of the season for Jones and the sixth of her career.
Ashley is an elementary education major and currently doing her student-teaching. She is the daughter of Skip and Karen Jones.
