PENSACOLA, Fla.- A day after snow showers and other wintery conditions blanketed the southeast and even parts of Florida that kept the University of West Florida Tournament from getting underway, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team managed to take the field on Saturday against the host-Argos amidst still mild temperatures. Battling back in both games of the double-header, UWF tallied two hard-fought 2-1 wins over PBA.
Palm Beach Atlantic senior right-hander Ashley Jones (2-2) started both games for the Fish as she was also the tough-luck loser in both ends of the double-header. She was countered by the good work of UWF right-hander Jillian Lafrance who earned the win in game one and tallied a save in game two.
PBA got on the board first in game one when junior shortstop Caitlin Bouschet lifted an offspeed pitch over the left-field fence for a homerun in the third inning to stake the Fish to the 1-0 lead.
Helping herself both in the pitcher’s circle and at the plate, LaFrrance answered quickly for the Argonauts in the top of the fourth inning with a long solo homerun of her own to knot the score at 1-1.
That is where the score would remain until the top of the seventh inning when the Argonauts were able to push across the eventual winning run. After a one-out single by Melissa Chastang, sophomore Amber Ingram was able to reach on a throwing error putting runners at the corners. An intentional walk to Lafrance would follow to load the bases. Up stepped designated player Shannon Miles who promptly delivered a soft hit into short centerfield for the go-ahead run.
Jones was then able to retire the next two hitters to close out the threat with a 2-1 deficit.
Lafrance tallied 12 strikeouts in the victory for UWF who limited the Sailfish to only five total hits. Jones collected eight strikeouts in the opener while allowing six hits and five walks (two intentional) in seven innings.
In game two, it was yet another tight pitchers duel between Jones and an Argonauts hurler. This time it was Ashleigh Allgood who faced off against Jones and the Sailfish.
Allgood allowed a third inning run that put PBA in front 1-0 as freshman Natalia Ojeda drove home fellow freshman Kim Doney as a line-drive single to right-field allowed Doney to come around from second-base and just narrowly slide around the catcher’s tag for a 1-0 Sailfish lead.
That lead would hold up for Palm Beach Atlantic until the sixth inning when the Argonauts once again found a way to push home the necessary runs. Lafrance started things off with a leadoff single then was replaced by a pinch runner. Shannon Miles then came through with a single through the left-side putting runners on first and second with nobody out.
Madison Conradis followed suit with the third straight hit of the inning to load the bases for UWF followed by a swinging strikeout of Lexi Mikedis. Up next stepped sophomore Danielle Kildow who delivered big-time with an opposite-field double that brought home two runs and gave UWF the 2-1 lead.
Lafrance would come on to close things out for West Florida as she worked around a leadoff walk to PBA pinch-hitter Erica Walters to earn her first save of the season.
PBA collected four hits as a team in the game with Ojeda finishing 2-for-3 in the game.
Jones once again was masterful and came away a number of key strikeouts to keep the Sailfish in the game. She finished with nine punchouts for the game while allowing nine hits and the two runs.
PBA will close out play at the UWF Invitational on Sunday, February 14 as they will take on the University of North Alabama at 9 a.m. and Saint Leo University at 11 a.m.
