Jones Dominates in Sailfish Opening Win Over Northwood

LAKE WORTH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team started the 2010 season in dominating fashion on Wednesday evening at John W. Anderson Field as they cruised to a 9-0 opening game win behind a big first-inning and the dominant right arm of senior Ashley Jones. The Fish erupted for five runs in the first inning while Jones dominated with 12 strikeouts in the five inning mercy rule game.
Palm Beach Atlantic sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning with five coming around to score. Senior Candace Horton got the rally started with a one-out double followed by a single from freshman Natalia Ojeda. After Erica Walters reached on an error, sophomore Mari Stokes connected for a two-run single to improve the score to 3-0.
Newcomers Cassady Faircloth and Miranda Welch each followed with singles to continue the rally while Brittany Schneider collected an RBI with a bases-loaded walk.
Jones struck out the side in the first and third innings with PBA adding an additional run in the bottom of the third inning when Schneider delivered an RBI single that brought home Welch to improve the lead to 6-0.
PBA put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth inning with three more runs to cap the win. Stokes added a two-run double while Welch added a sacrifice fly to close out the Sailfish scoring.
Stokes finished with four RBI’s in the game with a pair of hits while Ojeda and Faircloth each added a pair of hits in the win. Jones allowed only one hit and no walks as a double from Jennifer Roessler.
