Lady Fish Have No Answer for Ave Maria Second-Half Comeback

AVE MARIA, Fla.- After defeating Ave Maria University twice during the course of last season, both by at least 25 points, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team had the tables turned on them on Thursday evening as they dropped a tough 70-53 contest to the Lady Gyrenes at the Donahue Academy Gymnasium.
Having dropped 13 of their last 14 contests, the Lady Sailfish (5-15) looked as if they would break their streak tonight after a solid first-half which provided them with a 34-31 lead aver shooting 42% (13-31) in the first-half while limiting AMU to only a 36% (12-33) mark.
Things changed in a hurry however in the second period as Ave Maria closed out the second stanza by outscoring PBA 39-19 while tallying their 13th victory of the season against seven losses.
Four AMU starters reached double-figures on the night led by 17 points and 10 rebounds from Sandy Jenkins who also added in a trio of blocks and steals. Carey Fullilove also aided the Gyrenes cause with 17 points also while adding in six rebounds and four assists. Erika Derks and Emily Huber rounded out the double-digit scorers for AMU with 15 and 12 points respectively while Huber managed nine assists.
For the Sailfish, two Plano, Texas native, Ashley Dolberry and Hayley Fields led the way as Dolberry led all scorers with 18 points including a 10-of-15 showing from the free-throw line while Field posted 13 points on 5-of-13 from the field and four rebounds.
Palm Beach Atlantic will welcome in Eckerd College on Saturday, January 30th as part of a double-header with the women taking the court at 3 p.m. followed by the Tritons men taking on the Sailfish men’s squad at approximately 5 p.m.
