Northwood Connects for Thirteen Treys in Victory Over PBA Ladies

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Palm Beach Atlantic connected at the free-throw line however the Seahawks made good on their three-point opportunities as they drilled 13-of-26 long-range shots to defeat the Lady Sailfish in women’s basketball action on Tuesday evening. PBA registered 31 made free-throws in 40 attempts but it wasn’t enough as NU earned a 72-58 win over the Blue and White at the Rubin Arena.
PBA freshman point guard Ashley Dolberry scored a career-high 22 points for the Sailfish (4-11) in the loss while the Seahawks () placed three players in double-figures to earn the victory against their cross-town rival.
The two teams battled for a close contest for much of the first-half with neither team leading by more seven points until the final minutes of the half. NU pushed their advantage to double-digits on a three-pointer from Sissy Ryan with 2:01 remaining the first-half however PBA cut the lead back to eight points at 35-27 on a pair of Dolberry free-throws just before the half.
The second-half however would belong to the visiting Seahawks as they started the second stanza with another Ryan trey to go back up by double-figures. While the lead would eventually be cut back to just three-points as PBA registered an 8-0 run, the lead would be short-lived.
Northwood would continue to use their long-range arsenal to push the advantage back out to a more comfortable range as they closed out the victory with a 14 point cushion.
Dolberry connected on a PBA-record 17 free-throws on the night in her 20 tries. She also finished with six assists and two steals before fouling out and playing only 21 minutes.
Loren Wilkins put together a solid showing off the PBA bench with nine points including 7-of-8 from the charity stripe and also grabbed five rebounds. Junior Liz Fugate got the start at center and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to go along with six points.
NU was paced by 15 points from guard Taylor Wencis while Caitlin Noble and Ryan each posted solid showings off the Seahawks bench with 14 and 13 points respectively.
PBA finished with a 31% shooting mark on 13-of-42 while NU managed a 38% showing at 23-of-61. They also outrebounded the Fish 44-32 including 15 offensive boards.
The Sailfish will have a quick turnaround for their next contest as they will be hosting Johnson and Wales University on Wednesday, January 13th at 7 p.m. in the Rubin Arena.
