KISSIMMEE, Fla.- After a heartbreaking loss last night in penalty kicks, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team exacted some revenge against the likes of Mid-Continent University with a 3-0 Sailfish win. Senior Johnathon Clark registered the first two goals on the night as the Fish participated in another very physical contest at the NCCAA National Soccer Championship at Austin-Tindall Park.
Taking on MCU in a rematch of last season’s first-round loss suffered by PBA, the Sailfish (11-5-3) controlled the pace and style of play from the onset as they got in front with Clark’s goal just before the 7th minute of the match. Senior A.J. Mack served a high chip pass over the back line of MCU where it found the feet of Clark who then dribbled into the middle and fired a shot into the right corner of the net for the first goal of the match.
MCU outshot PBA 9-5 in the first-half but couldn’t put a shot past PBA senior goal keeper Joe Yurchak.
Seven minutes into the second-half, Clark would strike again, this time taking the ball near midfield all the way up the far sideline, dribbling around three defenders and going in for the score to the upper 90.
Junior Tumi Magadlela added in the final score of the contest in the 86th minute as Enrico Zanella’s pass deflected off the hands of the goal keeper for an easy score by Magadlela.
Another physical battle much like last night’s match versus Judson University, Mid-Continent was whistled for 15 fouls while PBA was issued 11 fouls. MCU had two players cautioned with red cards towards the end of the match.
Yurchak completed the shutout with two saves while sophomore Jonathan Strunk made one save in his few minutes of reserve action.
PBA will now close out their 2009 season with a match against Mount Vernon Nazarene University at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 5th.
