WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team welcomed in Florida Tech on Tuesday evening in the first of two Sailfish basketball games on the night at the Rubin Arena as the men also hosted Barry University. The Lady Panthers launched 32 attempts from three-point land en route to a 61-52 road victory.
With both squads entering play at 4-2, the ballgame started off very sluggish in the opening minutes as neither team seemed to find an offensive rhythm. After freshman Ashley Dolberry got the Fish on the board with a pair of free-throws to cut the early deficit to 5-2, the Panthers would then go on an early run and advance their lead as large as wide as 20-6.
Down but not out, the ladies responded with a 12-1 run of their own to place the score at 21-18 with the Panthers still in front. FIT would hold on to the lead entering halftime at 27-22.
Back came the two teams in the second-half as both would make runs at taking a lead and holding on however it would be FIT who would pull away late to secure the victory and improve to 5-2 on the season while PBA drops to 4-3.
Dolberry led the team in scoring for the third straight game for Palm Beach Atlantic with 14 points while excelling at the free-throw line by going 8-of-9. Sophomore Selethia Jackson would put together another strong second-half on her way to nearly tallying another double-double with 11 rebounds and eight points. Freshman Meredith Treat reached double-figures at 11 points however the Oklahoma native had six of the team’s 20 turnovers.
Leading FIT was the frequent outside touch of Emily McCollough who led four double-figure scorers with 15 points on 4-of-13 from beyond the arc. Laura Brunet added in 14 points on 2-of-8 from deep while Sharnae Ivery and Lynisha Nelson added 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Fish will take the next few days off from game action before traveling to Flagler College on Saturday, December 5th for a second showdown against the Saints this season. PBA defeated Flagler at the Rubin Arena a few weeks ago.
