GREENVILLE, S.C.- Having finished the season with a flourish, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team is heading to the NCCAA National Tournament next week with hopes of doing damage in their final action of the 2009 season. Over the last weekend, the Fish clinched their spot as they earned a NCCAA South Region Championship. After the conclusion of the two-day tournament it was announced that three PBA players were named NCCAA All-Region including junior Angie Kuhn being named the South Region Player of the Year.
Winners of their last five matches to improve to 9-8-1 on the season, the Sailfish swept their way through the NCCAA South Regional tournament large in part to the efforts of Kuhn and tough defensive play. Joining Kuhn on the All-Region listing were junior defenders Alex Regin and Brittany Gahan.
The leading goal scorer the past two seasons for Palm Beach Atlantic, Kuhn took her game to the next level through the final five games as she posted six goals including two game-winners. For the season, the junior North Fort Meyers native has totaled 13 goals and four assists, both tops on the team.
After suffering a season-ending knee injury in 2008, Regin returned to the lineup this season and has been a staple in the back defensive set for second-year head coach James Kryger. A gifted and well conditioned player, Regin has helped anchor the defense all season long. Joining Regin has been the steady improvement of Gahan who went from an injury-plagued season in 2008 to a strong 2009 performance while often times marking some of the top players for the opposition.
PBA opens up play at the NCCAA National Tournament on Wednesday, December 3rd when they take on The Master’s College at 12 p.m. in the opening game of the tournament. Stay tuned to pbasailfish.com for further details.
