FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.- Heading to north Georgia for the second time this month, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team continued their season for another day as they defeated Emmanuel College in the first round of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) South Regional tournament by a final score of 3-1.
With the Lions playing host to both the men’s and women’s regional tournament this season, the match versus PBA was essentially a home game as the honor of hosting the tournament is passed between the regional institutions. PBA hosted the tournament in 2008.
The Sailfish got on the scoreboard early from a goal by junior Angie Kuhn as she was assisted by freshman Courtney Calhoun to put PBA up 1-0.
The Lions fought back next with a goal of their own when a scramble for a loose ball after a corner kick found the feet of an Emmanuel player as they temporarily tied the contest with their first goal.
Both teams would enter halftime tied at one goal apiece as the Fish knew they would need a strong second-half effort to overtake EC for the victory.
Back came Kuhn again in the second-half as she pushed forward what would be the eventual game-winner. Brittany Gahan played a ball near the middle circle to the feet of freshman Gabby Lopez who then escaped one defender and slotted a nice pass to Kuhn for the score and a 2-1 lead.
Freshman Juliet Waller made it 3-1 later in the second-half as she chipped a ball over the head of the Lions goalkeeper from about 30 yards out. Kuhn was credited with the assist.
The Fish now move on to the South Regional championship match which is scheduled to be played at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Stay tuned to pbasailfish.com for more details on the hopeful clinching of a national championship berth for the Lady Fish.
