WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After three halves of somewhat sluggish basketball to start their season, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball finally shook off the early season rust in the second-half of Thursday evening’s home contest versus Webber International University at the Rubin Arena. Trailing by four points at the break, the Fish stormed out in the second-half outscoring the Warriors by 22 points to earn the 65-51 win.

Connecting on just 24% (8-33) of their shots in the opening stanza, the Lady Fish (1-1) nearly doubled their shooting mark in the second-half as they pulled away against WIU with a 47% mark in the second-half. After a disappointing home opening loss to the University of Tampa on Tuesday evening, the victory could not have come at a better time for the young Sailfish.

Leading the way for PBA was senior center Kristine Webb who finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds while also adding in three assists and a block in 33 minutes of court time. Also reaching double-figures was sophomore guard Hayley Fields who registered 12 points while connecting on 3-of-8 three-point attempts.

The first-half featured the visiting Warriors lead by as many as nine points when Heather Mirabella connected for a triple with 7:02 remaining  in the first-half as WIU led 19-10. After five straight points from Fields including a pair of free-throws and her first three-pointer of the night, the Warriors lead was back to only four points.

Two Meredith Treat free-throws would get the lead down to two points with just 3:01 remaining in the first-half at 21-19 before the lead grew back to 26-22 at intermission.

Back-and-forth the two teams went to start the second frame until a three-ball from Fields tied the ballgame at 27-27 two and a half minutes into the half. The two teams would trade baskets again before the Fish finally took the lead on a tip-in basket from sophomore Selethia Jackson to go up 31-29 with 16:06 to play in the game.

From there the Fish would gain momentum and increase their lead over the next few minutes, going on a 21-6 run to put the game out of reach. The lead grew to as many as 22 points when freshman Samantha Harvey nailed a three with 4:30 to play.

Highlighted by the strong interior play of Webb, the Fish won the rebounding battle at 48-45 while also outscoring the Warriors 32-22 in the paint.

Last season’s Sun Conference Newcomer of the Year Nikki King who averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game last year was held in check for much of the night with five points on 1-of-5 from the floor with six rebounds in 22 minutes of action.

Mirabella led the team in scoring with 12 points off the bench on 4-of-8 from beyond the arc while Chelsea Shipman added in 10 points on 4-of-13 from the field with five rebounds.

PBA freshman point guard Ashley Dolberry finished with nine points, five rebounds, and four assists while Liz Fugate chipped in with eight points off the bench. Jackson posted totals of six points and nine rebounds.

The Sailfish will complete their three-game home-stand to start the 2009-2010 campaign on Saturday, November 21st as they play host to Flagler College at 3 p.m. in the Rubin Arena.
