WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Although the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s tennis season is still a few months away from beginning in the spring, the team is gearing up for what could be another successful season. The squad was recently regionally and nationally ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) while sophomore Krasimir Atanasov was also nationally-ranked for his work as a singles player along with a doubles ranking with teammate Luke Bolanos.

Led by head coach Chi Ly, the Sailfish tennis teams continue to show improvement in the ever-challenging NCAA South Region and will enter the season as the ninth-ranked team in the region while Atanasov will hold the #12 spot for singles.

Barry University holds the top spot in the region while Philip Pakenbusch and Daniel Dueren, both from Valdosta State University, are the top-ranked singles players in the region.

Nationally, the Sailfish are ranked #37 for all NCAA Division II institutions with Atanasov being ranked as #27 in singles. Atanasov finished last season, his first in a Sailfish uniform, as the #59-ranked player in the country and with some solid early wins could overtake former Sailfish great Brock Newton as the highest-ranked player in PBA’s brief NCAA history. Newton, a 2008 graduate, was ranked as high as #23 in the nation to close out his career.

Joining Atanasov as a strong 1-2 punch at the top of Ly’s lineup is another sophomore in Luke Bolanos. Atanasov and Bolanos teamed as freshmen last season at the #1 doubles spot and currently stand at #16 in the South Region for doubles competition.

Looking to build from the success his young team showed last season, Ly is excited for what his team could accomplish in the Spring.

“It is exciting to see that we have consistently earned the respect and received the votes for both Regional and National rankings,” said Ly.

“We have graduated two seniors (John Tilton and James Buerkle) from last year but with some new additions to the team, we are expected to move up in the ranking and qualify for the NCAA Division II tournament this upcoming season,” continued the Sailfish leader.

PBA opens their season on February 5th, 2010 when they travel to Flagler College for a 4 p.m. match.
